Flight Mill and Stroboscopic Studies of Oriental Fruit Flies
نویسندگان
چکیده
A flight mill system was constructed in 1969 at the Hawaiian Fruit Flies Investigations Laboratory, Honolulu, to study the flight perform ance of 3 Hawaiian tephritids, Dacus cucurbitae Coquillett, D. dorsalis Hendel, and Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) . The unique system allowed simultaneous measurements of 18 individual flies, and data were auto matically recorded on magnetic tape and computer analyzed (Chambers et al., unpublished data). The parameters measured with the system were: time in flight and at rest, distance flown, flight velocity, percentage of time flying and resting, and number of flights/hr. Standards were established for flight of both sexes of D. cucurbitae and D. dorsalis at various ages using the flight mills. These data were augmented by wingbeat and weight studies for the 3 fruit flies, and the results are presented in this paper.

Flight Capacity of Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae) Adult Females Based on Flight Mill Studies and Flight Muscle Ultrastructure
The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is considered a major economic threat in many regions worldwide. To better comprehend flight capacity of B. dorsalis and its physiological basis, a computer-monitored flight mill was used to study flight capacity of B. dorsalis adult females of various ages, and the changes of its flight muscle ultrastructures were stu...
متن کاملComparative Transcriptome Analyses Uncover Key Candidate Genes Mediating Flight Capacity in Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) and Bactrocera correcta (Bezzi) (Diptera: Tephritidae)
Flight capacity is important for invasive pests during entry, establishment and spreading. Both Bactroceradorsalis Hendel and Bactroceracorrecta Bezzi are invasive fruit flies but their flight capacities differ. Here, a tethered flight mill test demonstrated that B. dorsalis exhibits a greater flight capacity than B. correcta. RNA-Seq was used to determine the transcriptomic differences associa...
متن کاملFlight Capacity and Dispersal of Walnut Husk Flies in Laboratory and Field Studies
Although the walnut husk fly, Rhagoletis completa, is sometimes considered to be a weak flier, very little is known about the actual flight capacity of this fly. With funding from CDFA and CSU-ARI (California State University Agricultural Research Initiative), we initiated studies, in the laboratory and field, of flight capacity and dispersal ability of husk flies. Adult flies in the laboratory...
متن کاملEvaluation of yeasts and yeast products in larval and adult diets for the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, and adult diets for the medfly, Ceratitis capitata, and the melon fly, Bactrocera curcurbitae
Several yeasts and yeast products were tested in adult diets for the medfly Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), and melon fly, Bactrocera curcurbitae (Coquillett) (Diptera: Tephritidae) and in larval liquid diet for mass-rearing B. dorsalis. Three hydrolyzed brewer’s yeasts (FNILS65, FNI200 and FNI210), one glutamine enriched yeast (GSH), one vitamin...
متن کاملClassical Olfactory Conditioning in the Oriental Fruit Fly, Bactrocera dorsalis
The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, is a serious pest of fruits and vegetables. Methyl eugenol (ME), a male attractant, is used to against this fly by mass trapping. Control effect may be influenced by learning, which could modify the olfactory response of the fly to this attractant. To collect the behavioral evidence, studies on the capability of this fly for olfactory learning are ne...
